Sep 11 GICL cardMembership of Galiano Island  Community Library is free to all residents of the Island.  To join, you must register in person at the Library.

Full-time residents

You will be asked to show personal photo ID (e.g. your drivers licence) and verification of your place of residence (e.g. a utility bill bearing your address).  We will record your full name, your mailing address, your home phone number and, if you wish, your e-mail address.

Seasonal residents

Same as Full-time residents, plus your principal (off-island) residence -- address and phone number.

Residents under 18 years

Minors are entitled to free membership, on condition that an adult who is a resident of the Island signs as Guardian.

For all residents the card is valid for two years, and can be renewed free of charge. However, there is a $2 charge for replacement of a lost card.

Visitors to the Island

Non-residents may purchase a temporary card, valid for three months. It gives full borrowing privileges, costs $5, and cannot be renewed.

You will be asked for personal photo ID (e.g. your drivers licence), your off-island permanent address and phone number and, if you agree, your e-mail address.

Lending policies

  • Loans:  You may have up to twelve items on loan at a time. Not more than three may be “new” items, and not more than three may be videos.  "New" items have a large yellow dot on their spine.
  • How long:  You may borrow each item for up to three weeks, and have the option of renewing each item, once only, for three more weeks. “New” items cannot be renewed.
  • Fines:  Like any other public library, we encourage on-time return of borrowed items by charging fines. When an item is not returned by its due date a fine of $1 per week is incurred. To avoid excessive charges, fines are capped at $5 per item.
  • Lost items:  Borrowers are required to pay the cost of replacing lost or damaged items.
  • Reminders:  Library staff will telephone to remind you that the book is overdue and that fines are accumulating.

Penalties:  If you do not respond to our call, the Library staff will consider the item (or items) lost and send you an invoice that lists what is missing, the amount of fines outstanding, and the cost of replacement. If your total debt is $10 or more, your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the account is settled.

Use your BC OneCard

BCOneCard

Our Library computer system is not at the moment able to process BC OneCards issued by other libraries.  Nevertheless, BC OneCard holders are welcome, and selected services are available.

Bring your BC OneCard, and personal ID, to the library.  We will give you, free of charge, a BC OneCard for use at Galiano Island Community Library.  This will entitle you to borrow books from our General Collection, and audio books (a total of five items) for up to three weeks.  Loans cannot be renewed.

Children and young adults 17 and under require a guardian, who is responsible for the choice of items borrowed and for fines and damages.

The items you borrow with the BC OneCard may be returned to the desk at our library, to the drop box when the library is closed, and to any BC library participating in the BC OneCard program, including your home library.

See above, under Lending Policies, for Fines and Penalties which should be paid only to the Galiano Island Community Library.

Click here for a summary of general policies for BC OneCard usage.

Internet access

The Library has two  computer stations available for patron use, both connected to the Internet. These stations are part of Industry Canada's Community Access Program (CAP). There is no charge for the use of these computers.

Users are asked to limit their sessions to 15 minutes when others are waiting their turn.

  • Galiano Island Community Library has no control over the information available through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content.
  • Galiano Island Community Library reserves the right to deny the use of its Internet terminals to users who access sites that promote illegal activities.
  • Violation by a patron of Copyright laws while using Library equipment is not permitted and the Galiano Island Community Library is not responsible for such violations by patrons.
  • The Internet terminals cannot be reserved, and are available on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Parents or guardians are responsible for their children's use of the Internet.  Children 10 years and under must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Internet users are responsible for any commercial transactions made while using Galiano Island Community Library Internet terminals.
  • Patron's own peripherals such as cameras and laptops may not be connected to the Galiano Island Community Library computers and personal software may not be installed on the terminals. Patrons who download data to a disk do so at their own risk.
  • Galiano Island Community Library is not responsible for damage to users' disks or computers, or for any loss of data, damage or liability that may occur from using the Galiano Island Community Library computers.
  • Users shall be liable and will reimburse the Galiano Island Community Library for repair costs if any damage to the Galiano Island Community Library computer equipment results from their misuse of the equipment.  Such misuse may also result in the denial to the patron of future computer use privileges.

E-reader lending program

kobo iconThe library has purchased three Kobo Touch e-readers in order to establish the extent of patrons' interest in this increasingly popular approach to book reading.  A six-month pilot project was launched at the beginning of the year, and results will be studied in mid-year.

For an overview of the program, and to learn how to participate, click on the photo of Kobos.
